Why I built Assets, by Diego, founder

“I’ve always had too many ideas. That sounds like a good problem, but it isn’t. I could never tell which one was worth my time, and even when I picked one, I didn’t know where to begin. So most of them just sat there.

I built most of Assets before sunrise, at the desk in my room, with the house asleep and school a few hours away. I ran on a few hours of sleep and didn’t really mind.

On weekends I go to a café in Ensenada, Deli Loop, my favorite one. The same table every time, the same order: a large iced latte with an extra shot, and a few minutes later, a brownie and a glass of water. I’ve built a lot of this from that table.

My caffeine went from about 150 milligrams a day to more than 400. I saw my friends less, not because I had to, but because I wanted to be building this more than I wanted to be anywhere else.

Some of my friends know what I’m doing. Not all the way, but they know. Mostly it’s just been me and the work, and I like it that way. I’m younger than most people building this kind of thing, which means I don’t have much to lose, and I want more time to build than I have.

Out of all those ideas, this is the one I couldn’t put down. I saw a gap no one was filling, and it let me do the two things I actually care about: building with AI, and understanding what people really need.

The night it really clicked was the night Assets could take an idea and put it into execution on its own. Not judge it, not advise it; do it. Because people don’t want to be guided. They want it done.

Plenty of nights it didn’t work, and I had school in a few hours anyway. I never let myself think it might not happen. I’ll make it work. No matter what, I’ll make it work.

I want to make it easier for people to run a business. And, honestly, I want to make money, which means building something actually worth paying for. I don’t think those two things are in conflict.

My name is Diego.

Now the ideas don’t just sit there. That’s the whole reason I built it.”
